McEnery Daughter Dies of Injuries

Mrs. Catherine Bengie Dowling, 22, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. John P. McEnery, died at San Jose Hospital yesterday afternoon of injuries received in a riding accident.

Deputy Coroner George Hannah said Mrs. Dowling fell from a horse at her father’s ranch near Mt. Hamilton Saturday evening.

He attributed her death to a basal skull fracture received in the accident. She underwent extensive surgery Monday night, but failed to rally.

Mrs. Dowling was the wife of Austin C. Dowling, an employee of Schwabacher and Co.’s San Jose office. They were married last February, and made their home at 85 E. Taylor St.

Mrs. Dowling graduated from San Jose State College in 1957. Before that, she attended San Francisco College for Women. After leaving San Jose State, she did post graduate work at University of San Francisco and joined the faculty of Notre Dame High School.

McEnery is a former State vice-chairman of the Democratic Party. In 1952, he served five months as director of the U.S. Mint in San Francisco. His business interests include Farmers Union hardware store.

Besides her parents, Mrs. Dowling leaves two sisters, Marty and Margaret McEnery, and two brothers, John and Thomas. Her grandmother, Mrs. Catherine McEnery, also survives her.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at the W. B. Ward Funeral Home. Rosary will be recited Friday night. Arrangements for the two rites have not been completed.
